Thrilled to be contributing to Inaka, an anthology of writing on rural Japan. In my piece have revisited my very first book, On the Narrow Road, and written about what became of the people I met when I made that journey.
Contributed an essay on geisha kimonos entitled Geisha: Perpetuating the Kimono Mystique to the very splendid and best-selling catalogue of the marvellous Kimono Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Also a review for the summer 2020 issue of Wasafiri, entitled Japan: Literatures of Remembering.
I am the historical consultant for Northern Ballet’s spectacular 2020 ballet Geisha.
I shall be appearing on Netflix in Age of the Samurai: Battle for Japan, co-produced by Smithsonian Canada, and have been enjoying immersing myself in a new period – sixteenth century Japan, the age of warfare when Japan was unified.
I am also a Visiting Lecturer at City University London where I teach Creative Writing Non-Fiction.
